Volunteer Program

Mission- The mission of the Volunteer Program is to incorporate the skills and energy of the community members who are willing to give of their time and expertise.  Volunteers are trained and utilized in all facets of the organization, crisis intervention, legal accompaniment, hospital accompaniment, clerical, fundraising, or special projects.  Volunteers play a very important part in the overall success of the agency.

Volunteer Trainings-  Trainings are held twice a year to provide new volunteers an in-depth orientation of the agency. During the month of June, a 30-hour training is held for those interested in volunteering on the Crisis Hotline. Then in October, a 40-hour training is held for Sexual Assault Volunteer Advocates. Mujeres Unidas staff and other social services agencies present information on their respective agency programs along with related topics such as Domestic Violence 101, Dynamics of Sexual Assault, Effects of Violence on Children, Legal Options, and Shelter Procedures. In 2009, 20 individuals (after having completed the training) were able to provide support to the staff with crisis intervention at the Shelter, on the Domestic Violence Hot-line, or as a Sexual Assault Advocate. In 2009, the Mujeres Unidas Sexual Assault Program was certified through the Office of the Attorney General.

Volunteer trainings will be held June and October.

The Rape Crisis Program is in desperate need of Sexual Assault Volunteer Advocates; therefore in 2010 we will be looking for volunteers who are willing to be on-call one weekend a month.
