Rape Crisis Center

The Women Together Rape Crisis Center continues to strive to improve community support and services rendered to survivors of sexual assault, their family and friends.  Services to survivors in Hidalgo and Starr Counties were first offered in 1982.  The center is comprised of Crisis Intervention Services, Supportive Counseling Program and the Prevention Education Program.  Services provided are as follows:

 

•Crisis intervention

•24 Hour Crisis Hotline

•Emergency Shelter

•On-Call Sexual Assault Survivor Advocate volunteer training

 

•Assistance education outreach

•Training to medical/ criminal justice/ and other social services agencies

 

•Sexual Assault prevention groups to shelter residents

•Hospital, Court, and Law Enforcement advocacy & accompaniment

 

•Assistance with Crime Victim's Compensation

•Liaison to community Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE)

•Member of the Hidalgo County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)

 

 

Our agency offers Primary Prevention Education for kinder- 12th graders and college students.  Training sessions are provided to medical professionals, law enforcement, clergy and other professionals.  Presentation and training topics include and are not limited to:  Rape Crisis Center Services Overview, Introductions to Sexual Assault and Guidelines to Helping a Survivor.

Nueva Vida Transitional

Supportive Housing Program

 

Nueva Vida Supportive Housing Program was founded in 2002 to provide short term  (18 months) supportive housing to women and their children who are victims of family violence and / or sexual assault. Nueva Vida is designed to:

• Assist families to become independent and self-sufficient

• Assist with referrals to community resources

• Assist with enrollment in higher education

• Assist on obtaining better employment

 

Who is eligible for Nueva Vida Transitional Supportive Housing Program?

Any women, victim of family violence and / or sexual assault who is:

• Head of household with dependent children under the age of 18*

• Committed to actively participate in supportive services and case management

• Goal oriented to becoming independent and self-sufficient

 

*Exception: 18 year old dependents living at home must be single, employed or a full time student.

 

What does Nueva Vida Transitional Supportive Housing Program offer families?

• Personal Advocacy

• On-site GED and ESL classes

• Daycare assistance while attending GED or ESL classes

• Car repair assistance

• Rental assistance

• Life skills classes

• Financial Empowerment

Legal Advocacy

Legal Advocacy Program

The Legal Advocacy Program staff assists agency clients by assessing individual needs, providing education on legal rights options, and providing support and accompaniment in the client's pursuit of those options.

In collaboration with the Texas Rural Legal Aid (TRLA), legal advocates assist agency clients in obtaining divorces, filing police reports, assist in obtaining protective orders, and provide court accompaniment.

Advocates also work closely with Proyecto Libertad to assist immigrant battered women who are victims of crime.

Legal Advocates also provide advocacy to address conflicts between clients and landlords to prevent homelessness.

The focus this program is to  provide youth with an opportunity to learn vital life skills that will help them to make healthy choices, overcome adversity, and remain drug free while gaining a greater understanding of themselves and others.
